Wednesday April 19 – Dutch-American Friendship Day

John AdamsDutch-American Friendship Day remembers the day in 1782 that John Adams, the second president of the United States, was received by the States General in The Hague and recognized as Minister Plenipotentiary of the United States of America.

It is also the day that the house John Adams purchased at Fluwelen Burgwal 18 in The Hague became the first American Embassy in the world.

In 1982, two hundred years later, President Reagan proclaimed April 19, 1982, to be Dutch-American Friendship Day. Fifteen years later, in 2007, Congress made this a repeating commemoration, and on March 12, 2007 the House of Representative officially established Dutch-American Friendship Day:

“The U.S./Dutch relationship has stood the test of time and has strengthened in the crucible of conflict as the Dutch have stood beside us in times of peace and war. The Dutch supported us in our war for independence. Sixty years ago Dutch and American servicemen stood side by side during World War II and today the Dutch stand by us still in the Global War on Terror.
The debt we owe to our Dutch friends is seen not only in our people, and in the persons of such famous Dutch Americans as Presidents Martin VanBuren, and Theodore and Franklin Roosevelt, but also in our experience as a Nation. Our traditions of religious freedom and tolerance as well as our system of government, all have spiritual and legal roots in our relationship with the Dutch Republic. ”

Dutch Royal Couple “Staatsieportretten” Unveiled

Two unique, life-sized portraits of King Willem-Alexander and Queen Máxima were unveiled in February 2017 at Sociëteit De Witte in The Hague. Jaap Smit, Commissioner of the King of the province of South-Holland, had the honor of unveiling the paintings.

Amsterdam-based artist Urban Larsson was chosen to paint the two life-sized portraits of the Royal Couple. The artist explains: “in accordance with centuries-long traditions, the man is portrayed on the left so that the woman is placed on the side of the heart of the man. The king is the Head of State and should be firmly grounded, while the queen motions towards him. The opened hand of Willem-Alexander shows that, in effect, they jointly carry out the mission”. It is the first time that the Royal Couple have been portrayed this way.

July 11, 2015 – USS COD / O19 – 70th Anniversary

Join us on Saturday July 11, 2015 at 2:00 pm for 70th anniversary commemoration of the USS COD’s rescue of the crew of the stranded Dutch submarine O19 in the South China Sea. Part of the celebration will be a reenactment of this unique event in naval history:

On July 8, 1945 the O19 was on her way from a patrol in the South China Sea to the Philippines when it struck Ladd Reef, a coral reef in the South China Sea, submerged due to high tide. They sent out a distress call, and the next day the USS COD arrived on the scene. For two days the USS COD tried to pull the O19 off the reef. When all attempts had failed the decision was made to destroy the O19 as to not let its secrets fall in Japanese hands. Demolition charges were placed, two torpedoes were fired and destroy the aft, and 16 shells of the 5-inch deck gun finished the job.

153 American and Dutch submariners lived together on the USS COD for several days traveling to safety. The USS COD became an adopted member of the Dutch Onderzeedienst (submarine service) to pay tribute to the unique rescue mission and friendship between submariners of two allied nations.

The only international sub-to-sub rescue in history is commemorated every year aboard the USS COD with a reenactment of the transfer of the Dutch flag aboard the US sub, and a celebration of the enduring friendship between two submarine crews and two great nations. This year, the 70th anniversary commemoration, will be attended by dignitaries from both the US and Dutch Armed Forces. Captain Hugo Ammerlaan, Commander Royal Netherlands Navy Submarines Division, will be part of the reenactment, portraying the wartime O19 skipper LCDR Drijfhout van Hooff.

A punch and cake reception follows the ceremony on USS COD grounds.

Admission to the event (between 1:00 pm and 3:00 pm only) is free of charge.

The submarine USS COD is docked on North Marginal Road, between E. 9th St. and Burke Lakefront Airport, on Cleveland’s North-coast Harbor.
